A GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is a unique 15-digit identifier assigned to every GST registered taxpayer in India. Here’s how the 15 digits are structured:
First two digits represent the state code as per the Indian Census. Example: 29 = Karnataka, 27 = Maharashtra, 07 = Delhi.
The next 10 characters are the PAN (Permanent Account Number) of the taxpayer, linking the GSTIN directly to their income tax identity.
The 13th digit indicates the number of registrations the entity has within the same state under the same PAN. 1 = first registration, 2 = second, and so on.
Digit 14 is “Z” by default (reserved for future use). Digit 15 is a check digit computed using the Luhn algorithm to validate the GSTIN.
